This has been the most reliable and dedicated addition to our team. Whenever we need a dumpster they make it happen!! I definitely recommend this company and I have used many!
Common reasons to rent a residential dumpster
The most common reason dumpster rental for home use is initiated is because a homeowner is taking on a project that generates a lot of waste and they need a convenient way to get rid of it. And while projects top the list, there are many reasons why our customers come to us for residential dumpster rental services.

Rent a roll-off dumpster for house and yard cleanup
While it is true that professional contractors are big proponents of renting dumpsters, you don’t have to be a pro to have one delivered to your home. Let’s say a storm has ripped through your area and you have piles and piles of limbs, twigs and other refuse lying around – you need a way to get rid of all that stuff and we’ve got the solution.
Yard cleanup is a common reason for renting a dumpster, as are general house cleanups, such as projects related to spring cleaning. A dumpster rental for house cleanouts helps to make quick work of an otherwise time-consumer project.
- Home cleanup or “Spring” cleanings
- Garage or basement clean out
- Home clean out for preparing upcoming move to a new residence
- Storm damage cleanup
- Landscaping debris removal
Any way you can find to streamline a project at your home is going to help you come to a successful end, so don’t forget to rent a residential roll-off dumpster, because every project somehow leads to a lot more waste generated than what was initially planned.
They were very kind and helpful
This is an amazing company, I used it to clean out my house. My backyard is 8,000 square feet and they were kind enough to back the dumpster up all the way to my house so we didn’t have to walk so far. They were very kind and helpful, if I need a dumpster again I will use and recommend this company.
Rent a residential construction dumpster for home renovation
Residential construction dumpster rental makes perfect sense. Construction debris removal must be considered in all types of projects, whether it’s remodeling a kitchen, tearing down a shed, reroofing, residing or just doing some yard work that generates a ton of debris. Residential construction dumpster for home renovation projects tops the list of why our customers come to us, so make sure as you’re planning your next project you reserve a dumpster with us.
- Construction debris removal
- House demolition debris removal
- Roof shingles removal
- Flooring removal
- Fence or deck debris removal
- Home renovation trash removal
- Other home improvement projects
A small basement cleanout seemed like an easy enough project at the start, but the more you dig, the more junk you find. It’s a common scenario, but regardless of what room you’re working on or how small or large your outdoor project might be, plan on having a dumpster delivered so you can finish your project on time with little to no hassles.
They took care of the needed permits for the dumpster
I used A City for my dumpster rental for my home reno project in NW Chicago. A City was on time, worked with my schedule and took care of the needed permits for the dumpster. I am very pleased with the service and would use them again.
Rent the right dumpster size for your residential use
When renting a dumpster for residential use, you want to make sure you’re getting the right sized unit. Residential dumpster rental sizes span between 6 and 30 cubic yards. A small residential dumpster rental will help you knock out small projects, like a one or two-room cleanout. A larger dumpster rental for residential use can include anything from a large roofing project or new construction, both of which are known to create piles and piles of refuse. Fortunately, A City Dumpster is here to help you determine which size unit will work best for your project.

Residential dumpster rental sizes and dimensions at A City Suburban Service:
6 cubic yards
The smallest dumpster in our fleet holds up to 4,000 lbs of material and is especially suited for landscaping projects involving dense and heavy materials, such as bricks, concrete and dirt. This unit is also a good match for smaller projects, such as small cleanouts where the waste is minimal.
10 cubic yards
Holding up to 5,000 lbs of waste, this unit measures 14'x 6'x 3.5’ and will be a good fit for projects ranging from two-car garage cleanouts, small remodeling jobs and work that involves dirt, bricks and concrete. While it is one of the smaller units, it can be used for roofing projects no larger than 1,000 square feet.
15 cubic yards
Measuring 16’x8’x3.5’, this dumpster will manage up to 6,000 lbs of debris, which is around the average amount generated in a medium-sized remodeling project. Our customers have utilized this middle-sized unit for roofing projects, too, but this one can handle a 1,500-square-foot roof.
20 cubic yards
For homeowners with a 3-car garage that needs to be cleaned out or is taking on a construction project, this larger unit is perfect because it is capable of holding 8,000 lbs of waste. Popular for deck removal projects, this one unit can also handle roofing projects on 2,200 square-foot roofs.
30 cubic yards
Measuring an impressive 18’x8’x6,’ our largest unit can hold 11,000 lbs of debris. Mostly used for larger jobs, like new construction or demolition projects where a garage or shed is coming down, this unit has also been used in evictions where a large amount of waste is generated and in whole-house cleanouts. When your job is massive, this is the dumpster that can handle it.

What you can and can't put in your residential dumpster?
While almost any type of waste can be put in a dumpster, there are materials that are hazardous to the environment and have no business being hauled off to the landfill. When you question whether or not something you’re throwing away might be an environmental hazard, stop and ask if it can legally be placed in a landfill.

Some banned items might surprise you, such as refrigerators. But there is a good reason for it – the cooling agent (freon) in refrigerators and freezers, if not removed, can leach into the groundwater and cause contamination. Tires from vehicles are also banned due to the toxic chemicals released as they break down. There are actually many different types of products that don’t belong in a dumpster and we’ll cover them, as well as the things you can put in a dumpster, here.

Residential dumpster rental permits and requirements in Chicago
Before you have a dumpster placed on or near your property, be sure to do your research about the permits required regarding dumpster rentals.
In Chicago, the city requires a $50, three-day dumpster permit. If you’re going to take on a more extensive project that requires you to have your dumpster for a longer period, you can acquire a 30-day dumpster permit for $100. These fees apply to dumpsters measuring 30 cubic yards or less in Chicago. However, for the Central Business District of Chicago, rates increase, so the fee for the three-day permit is $100 and the fee for the 30-day permit is $200. As a reminder, the Central Business District, also referred to as “the loop,” is bordered by Halstead on the west, W. Division Street and W. Chicago Ave. on the north, Roosevelt Road on the south and the lake to the east.
There is also a permit application fee, which changes annually, so you’ll need to prepare for that added expense. To learn more about permits and all the fees associated with them, check out the dumpster permits article.
If you want to avoid the permitting fees, have the dumpster placed on your actual property rather than on public property (streetside). For example, most homeowners will have the dumpster placed on their private driveway, which is an area where a permit is not required. Keep in mind that the City of Chicago does not allow dumpsters to be placed in yards, which is an option for many suburban communities surrounding Chicago. If you have a private residence in Chicago but do not have a private drive, arrange in advance to have the dumpster, with a permit, placed curbside as close to your home as possible.
